LAKE LANIER RETREAT | ATLANTA
When the client discovered a secluded site on Lake Lanier, they envisioned a quiet retreat in their native Atlanta to welcome family and friends year-round. The dramatically sloped property had been held by builder MAK+KAM since 2021, and together with Brian Cash Works for interiors, they set out to create a second home that balances comfort and sophistication.
Boasting over 8,000 square feet of finished space, with 13 beds and 8.5 baths, the residence was designed for seamless indoor-outdoor living, featuring terraces, open porches, and a screened porch with a fireplace for gatherings in every season. The clients sought a warm, neutral palette grounded in natural materials, which was developed into an exploration of contrast and tone, pairing elements like steel, stone masonry, and natural hardwoods along with soft leather, wool, and textured hides to create drama throughout. With two young children, the clients wanted spaces that could adapt to family life, weekends with friends, and extended holiday stays, intimate when needed but always ready for a full house.
Each bedroom was imagined as a private hotel suite, distinct yet related, offering guests the comfort of a boutique stay while maintaining a shared sense of ease. Beyond the full construction delivery, MAK + KAM coordinated the full interior design package and installation. Sourcing over 50 artworks from galleries in Los Angeles, Bath, New York, Barcelona, Vienna, Istanbul, Stockholm, and Montreal, layering the home with a global perspective and personality.
The collection culminates in a hand-stitched, quilted wall-hanging of Lake Lanier by Brooklyn-based Haptic Lab, tracing the path of the Chattahoochee River and honoring the area’s lost Indigenous and Black histories. This project offers a new point of view for Atlanta, where a lake house becomes a refined, quietly modern retreat rooted in meaning, materiality, and memory
